Decarbonising Transport

Transport is the corner of the energy system that electrification has reached last. Cyprus still moves people and freight on a fleet that is almost entirely liquid-fuelled, which makes it both the slowest sector to shift and the one where a marginal change moves the most emissions. The reason this sits on a solar consultancy's site is that road transport is turning into an electricity problem. Every vehicle that swaps a fuel tank for a battery becomes new load on a grid that is already tightest on summer afternoons, and a new reason to generate behind the meter. If you run a depot, a hotel car park or a large commercial roof, charging demand and on-site solar are one planning question rather than two.

Timing is the part most plans get wrong. A commercial fleet that charges overnight is a very different proposition from one that tops up at midday, and only one of those pairs naturally with a rooftop array. Getting it wrong costs twice: once in a grid connection sized for a peak that never needed to happen, and again in generation exported at noon while the vans draw from the network hours later. The engineering question is rarely whether to electrify. It is when the electrons arrive.
