Cyprus solar yield-loss calculator

Every PV system in Cyprus quietly loses energy to three things: soiling (dust on the glass), downtime (faults you didn't catch), and curtailment (grid throttling). This tool estimates how much that costs you a year, and how much of it O&M can win back.

kWh/kWp·yr · Cyprus ≈ 1,650-1,800

€/kWh · tariff or avoided cost

Dust build-up. Recoverable by cleaning. Dusty Cyprus sites often 3-10%.

Inverter trips, string faults, unnoticed outages. Recoverable with monitoring + O&M.

Grid-operator throttling. Mostly structural, not recoverable by O&M.

How the calculation works

Baseline annual production is system size (kWp) × specific yield (kWh/kWp·yr). In Cyprus, a well-oriented fixed system typically yields ~1,650-1,800 kWh per kWp per year (one of the highest solar resources in the EU), so the tool defaults to 1,700; adjust it to your site's measured figure.

Each loss is applied as a percentage of that baseline and valued at your €/kWh (a feed-in tariff, a PPA price, or the retail cost you avoid by self-consuming). The three losses are:

  • Soiling · dust and pollen on the glass. Gradual, weather-linked, and fully recoverable by cleaning. On dusty Cyprus sites it commonly runs 3-10% between cleans.
  • Downtime · energy lost while an inverter trip, string fault, or communication outage goes unnoticed. Recoverable with 24/7 monitoring and a fast O&M response.
  • Curtailment · output the grid operator throttles for network reasons. Largely structural: O&M can measure and document it, but not remove it.

The tool sums the three as independent percentages, a deliberately simple estimate, not a validated yield model. Real interactions (e.g. a fault during a curtailment window) mean the true figure varies. Treat the output as an order-of-magnitude planning number, then let a proper performance review measure your actual losses. The recoverable figure counts soiling + downtime only, since those are the two an O&M programme can act on.
